Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival: "The Winter's Tale"

Independent Shakespeare Co. presents Shakespeare's great romance The Winter's Tale as part of the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival. In Sicilia, all is well. But when King Leontes becomes consumed with jealousy, a misunderstanding spirals into tragedy. Indifferent to the word of the Gods, reason, or natural sentiment, he resigns his wife, son, and unborn child to a dreadful fate. As the years roll on, however, a very different destiny is evolving in the kingdom of Bohemia. Rustic and wild, it is a place where love prevails and music and humor are rampant. When the two worlds intersect, miracles come to pass.

The show is totally free, and no tickets or reservations required, so just show up! Seating is first come, first served,

Bring a blanket or chair to sit on, comfortable shoes, a jacket for when it gets chilly (and it does get chilly), and a picnic to munch. Leave the alcohol and dogs at home.

On select weekends (July 8, 20, and 29) the festivities start early at 5pm with Players in the Park, an active introduction to this season's plays. Students will get the words of Shakespeare off the page and into their world: they might even put on a crown, pick up a toy sword, and portray Prince Hamlet (or Falstaff, or the Princess of France) from the stage. Every participant also receives a packet of materials to take home. Participation is free, but reservations are required. Call or email for more information.
